Gisborne, located in the northwest corner of the North Island of New Zealand, is characterized as the first city in the world to see the sun. Known for its agriculture and for the production of wine that is valuable for its economy, it has an enviable coastline. In these mountainous parks, surfing and fishing are practised. In the centre of the city, Whataupoko is the headquarters of the District Council.

Ancient traditions haunt and are evident in many parts of the city such as Kaiti Beach, where Captain Cook first arrived in New Zealand. Its history tells that Titirangi was the arrival point of the migratory waka (canoes) that brought the first Maori to the area, Horouta.
