BF Goodrich History
In 1870, Dr. Benjamin Franklin Goodrich founded North America’s first tire factory in Akron, Ohio. Even at that time, performance was already an integral part of the brand’s DNA. This led Charles Cross Goodrich, Benjamin’s son, to establish America’s first tire research center. As a result, BFGoodrich began to stand out from the competition as early as 1903, when it supplied the tires for the Winton touring car, the first to cross North America from east to west.
BFGoodrich soon discovered another means of improving mobility as it entered the rapidly expanding aviation industry. This enabled the brand, driven by challenges, to find new ways to push boundaries. The brand participated in the speed record of 75 km / h reached in 1909 during the first international race held in Reims, in a Curtiss Airplane Corporation aircraft.
In the 1920s, the opportunity came to conquer a challenge that was previously unthinkable. In 1927, BFGoodrich supplied the tires for the Spirit of St. Louis airplane, on which Charles Lindbergh made the first non-stop transatlantic flight in history.
Being the first manufacturer to win consecutive titles at The Indianapolis 500 was just the beginning of this iconic performance-driven brand. The brand soon discovered its passion for the drier side of racing and established a good reputation in the off-road area. From the deserts of Baja California to the barren terrain of the Dakar, BFGoodrich has seen it all and won it all.
It stands to reason, when you think about it, that the tire manufacturer that created the off-road category still dominates that terrain today. Since his first victory in the Baja 1000 race in 1972, he has accumulated more than 200 off-road championships. This includes 21 consecutive titles in the Baja 1000 competition between 1986 and 2007, making BFGoodrich a milestone in North American desert racing.
But like any great competitor, BFGoodrich was growing restless and wanted to know what other options the world had to offer. The year 2006 became a turning point for his world legacy, as he entered the World Rally Championship (WRC), where Sébastien Loeb was able to retain the title for five consecutive years, and made possible the triumphs of Citroën and Ford in the constructors’ championships.
During his brief stint in the WRC (2006-2010), BFGoodrich won every driver and manufacturer title available. The brand also participated in the International Rally Championship (IRC) in 2007 and won the first year with Peugeot.
Building on this success, BFGoodrich won titles at the FIA World Automobile Federation (FIA) Off-Road Rally World Cup and at the Dakar. With eight Dakar victories in mid-2000, BFGoodrich returned in 2016 to pick up the place it had left by propelling the Peugeot team to victory.
The brand’s presence is still felt in numerous local races, especially in North America, where the quality of BFGoodrich tires excels on a wide variety of surfaces, including dirt, sand, rock and asphalt, proving the incredible versatility of their products.
