Firestone Tyres History
After coming from a humble farm in Ohio, United States, this man born in 1868 became a true visionary that allowed him to be the leader of one of the main tire manufacturers. And it is that Harvey S. Firestone always had a global vision and an entrepreneurial spirit, but without forgetting a strong local commitment. Only at the age of 22, in 1900, he founded The Firestone Tire & Rubber Co and in 1928 he opened the first Firestone factory outside the United States, specifically in Brentford, England.
To achieve this, Harvey S. Firestone envisioned that the future of transportation would go hand in hand with four-wheeled motor vehicles and, in 1906, agreed with his friend Henry Ford to be the manufacturer of the Model T tires. In 1920, the company had a turnover of $ 115 million. This time of change inspired Firestone to open multi-service stations, which quickly spread throughout the United States, selling tires, offering oil and battery changes, as well as brake repairs and other maintenance work.
One of the great essences of Firestone was that his mind did not stop thinking, since as he himself said, “ideas are the greatest asset of any man.” Under this ideology, in 1923 it introduced a new low-pressure tire technology, the “balloon” tires, with which it offered a more comfortable product, with better grip than the tires of the time.
He was also a pioneer in creating the first slip resistant tire, placing a rubber-textured tread on the tire’s surface to create traction. This allowed for safer driving at higher speeds, fewer accidents, and a wider acceptance of cars.
