Petone is a suburb of Lower Hutt that is located at the southern end of the Hutt Valley, north coast of the port of Wellington. It is a low-lying area that is vulnerable to tsunamis and flooding threats. Petone is considered the first European settlement in the Wellington region. Falken is a well-known brand of tyres for cars and light trucks. It belongs to the Japanese conglomerate Sumitomo Rubber Industries and its origins date back to 1983.

Its primary marketing strategy has been to promote itself in drifting car races, aggressive UHP (ultra-high-performance product) tyre designs and remarkable technological innovation. By 1985 he began exporting tyres to the United States of America, and in 1991 he established his first distribution centre in California, then in New Jersey, Texas and Tennessee.
