3.- Goodyear Tyres History

Goodyear is a company with a worldwide presence as the leader in the manufacture of car tires, although it has great competitors as we have seen recently, it is still one of the most important companies in its field. Its foundation was given in 1898 by Frank Seiberling in the town of Akron in Ohio, the company is named after the inventor of vulcanized rubber, Charles Goodyear.

At the age of 38 Seiberling bought a factory with just a capital of 3.500 dollars which he had obtained thanks to a loan from a relative, at that time the objective was to transfer rubber and cotton to other parts of the world, the destination was a town that He only had rail transport, the first businessman who bought in the company was called David Hill and invested 30,000 dollars for what he became the first president, however Frank Seirberling continued to lead the large projects of the company.

Goodyear’s first activities began with only 13 employees who were dedicated to manufacturing tires for bicycles and other vehicles such as carriages, after the first month of work the company’s sales began to rise to approximately $ 8,500, the tires that were launched since At first they marked an important milestone thanks to quality and recognition did not take long to arrive as in 1916 after a good run they implemented a slogan so that people identify more with them: “More people ride on Goodyear tires than on any other” which helped a lot to its consolidation in the tire manufacturing sector, becoming one of the most important in 1926.

Goodyear with the military and motorsports

Years before, tire models such as the Rut-proof off-road were launched, they had even already launched the first airship with their name, they also showed that they were continuing to innovate to improve their products with the launch of the all-season tire which had a grooved profile. in 1927. With the advent of World War II the company relied on its Goodyear Aircraft division to use special tires on fighter jets, years before it had gone through an excellent run when in the late 1800s bicycles had become incredibly popular. which greatly benefited the company. The classic symbol of the winged foot that is famous throughout the world is largely thanks to Frank Seiberling who was the founder of the company, the curious thing about this story is that in Frank’s house there was a statue of the god on some stairs mythological Mercury or known to the Greeks as Hermes, that was the inspiration he had to create the symbol of the company.

During the 90s Goodyear had a very close relationship with Formula 1, sponsoring several drivers with their tires, achieving close to 368 victories and winning several tournaments, which helped to promote the brand’s name and then work together with manufacturers of Vehicles like Ferrari or Team McLaren also sponsor famous races such as NASCAR with the Goodyear Eagle tire and the Wrangler. In 1987 Goodyear launched the ZR-S which is one that manages to reach Z speeds, that is to say of more than 240 km per hour, in 1992 they launched another model that is the Runflat which moves without air so if it suffers a puncture can continue to travel at speeds of 80 or 90 km per hour, more recently in 2007 Goodyear reached an agreement with NASA to develop tires that will allow exploring surfaces of the moon and Mars, on the other hand this company is also responsible from brands like Dunlop, Kelly, Fulda, Lee, Salva and Devica.
